Once the app is running, set the value to the maximum you desire. This is required for AlDente to be able to write the SMC value as root. When you start AlDente for the first time, it will ask you to install its helper tool. To work around this, right-click on the application and click Open: Upon opening, you'll probably get a message like AlDente cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified. Then unzip the archive and move AlDente.app to your Applications folder. Head over to AlDente's Github Page and download the latest release. Most likely it's just using the same feature OS X is using, just more explicitly. The tool itself writes this value to the SMC of your MacBook. Luckily there's a free tool that allows you to take control over the maximum charge level.ĪlDente gives you the possibility to set a maximum charge level for your MacBook. Lenovo and Tesla are both offering such a feature out of the box, Apple doesn't. I wanted to control the maximum charge level myself before the battery was degraded. Since my battery health is still high, it didn't reduce the maximum charge even after being plugged in for multiple days. In my tests, it drained the battery a bit after being plugged in for a while and then recharged it back to 100%. This happens as needed to ensure that your battery charges to a level that's optimized for your usage-reducing wear on the battery, and slowing its chemical aging.īut what does that mean exactly? The description in the System Preferences is a bit clearer:Īccording to this message, OS X will start reducing the maximum charge of the battery when it ages, to extend its lifespan. Based on the measurements that it collects, battery health management may reduce your battery's maximum charge when in this mode. The feature does this by monitoring your battery's temperature history and its charging patterns. Apple describes the feature as: The battery health management feature in macOS 10.15.5 is designed to improve your battery's lifespan by reducing the rate at which it chemically ages. It is found under System Preferences > Energy Saver. In Mac OS Catalina 10.15.5, Apple has introduced a new feature called Battery Health. To avoid this from happening again, I started looking for a way to control the charging behavior of my MacBook. To replace the swollen battery, the entire Topcase had to be replaced. Upon inspection with a ruler, I noticed that the keyboard was curved because the battery had swollen. I first noticed that there's a problem when my trackpad wasn't clicking properly anymore. For Lithium-Ion batteries, it's not healthy to remain charged at 100% all the time. This means my MacBook is constantly connected to the charger. Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, I work from home. No video editing, games, coding, etc.4 min The scary sign of a buldging macbook battery To keep in mind, my usage is completely normal, I only use this laptop to do light task. As of now, my battery's health is 87.9% on coconutBattery and 93% on macbook's system, only after 8 cycles. In the beginning, the coconutBattery shows the battery's health is on 89.1% and the system is 95%. I'm aware that coconutBattery percentage is different from macbook's system percentage (read other users review). I set the maximum charge to 79% and never drain it below 20%. Some times later, the battery's health kept degrade untill I decided to install AlDente and coconutBattery last month to prevent overcharge and monitor my battery performance in real time. I thought that was normal since the battery will degrade after all. I also kept the optimized battery charging feature on.Īfter 2 months of use, I noticed the battery's health was degrading to 99% (on the 20th-ish cycle). At first, I charge when it's on 20-ish% to 80% at maximum manually, sometimes I missed by charging it over 80% (90ish% at max, rarely 100%). I tried my best to prevent the battery degradation by reading other's experience and watch some videos about the cycles, max and min charging, and other stuff. I have this MBA M1 2020 for 6 months (September 2022) and this is my first macbook ever.
